Shay, Michael and Susong, Carrie, "Geology: Just Touching the Surface [4th grade]" (2005). Understanding by Design: Complete Collection. 4. https://digitalcommons.trinity.edu/educ_understandings/4
In this elementary science curriculum unit, students explore patterns of change in the Earth's layers through hands-on experiments and activities, as well as case studies of geologic phenomena. Students learn about volcano types, volcanic activity, and plate movement and its effects. Students are exposed to the plate tectonic theory and its implications on geologic history. Case studies of historic geologic events make interdisciplinary connections in this Earth science unit.
Susong, Carrie, "Tell Me a Story! Tales from Africa & other Cultures [4th grade]" (2008). Understanding by Design: Complete Collection. 45. https://digitalcommons.trinity.edu/educ_understandings/45
In this elementary interdisciplinary English language arts and social studies curriculum unit, students learn how folk tales can reflect the culture of a community. They read a variety of African folktales and are exposed to the geography and oral traditions of different African cultures. Students also acquire writing and storytelling skills as they develop a folk tale to explain aspects of their own culture.
Shay, Michael and Susong, Carrie, "Revolutionary Perspectives: Using Primary Sources and Art to Teach the Causes of the American Revolution [4th grade]" (2006). Understanding by Design: Complete Collection. 18. https://digitalcommons.trinity.edu/educ_understandings/18
In this elementary interdisciplinary social studies and art unit, students learn about the events that led to the American Revolution by studying primary and secondary print sources and artwork. Students learn that British and American points of view differed greatly in pre-Revolutionary times. Students learn to distinguish between points of view and explain how they played an important role in the events leading to Revolution. In a performance-based assessment, students create a written account and piece of art to interpret an event of the American Revolution from a specific perspective.
Lesher, Kristen and Susong, Carrie, "Think Inside the Box: Using Tables to Understand Number Patterns [4th grade]" (2009). Understanding by Design: Complete Collection. 83. https://digitalcommons.trinity.edu/educ_understandings/83
This elementary mathematics curriculum unit introduces students to more sophisticated number patterns and teaches students how to describe the relationship between two sets of data in a table. In the unit, students identify patterns in everyday situations, record those patterns in the form of a table, and begin to use arithmetic expressions as well as other strategies to describe relationships between sets of data in a table. The performance task asks students to create tables comparing age relationships and to provide written and verbal descriptions of the tables.
Susong, Carrie, "Getting to Know Me [9th grade]" (2010). Understanding by Design: Complete Collection. 129. https://digitalcommons.trinity.edu/educ_understandings/129
This is an elementary English Language Arts curriculum unit written for English language learners at a bilingual school in Honduras. It is designed to be taught at the beginning of the school year. Since the unit focuses on classroom-community building and basic grammar, it could be adapted for a primary grade class of native English speakers or for a level 1 class of foreign language learners. Suggestions and resources for differentiation are mentioned for several lessons.
